Recently, I've been doing some heavy thinking, (Well, heavy for me at least.) on the subject of fan art and why I do so much of it. Fan art is my way of justifying my existence. I see all the talented and admired people that make the comics that I enjoy so much, then inevitably turn to look at my own pitiful accomplishments. Needing to distinguish myself from the sea of fans these people have around them, I spend hours and hours meticulously inking in pictures of their characters in the desperate hope that they'll get me noticed. I want terribly to be known as these people are, but it's more than I could ever do by myself. I feel that I must contribute to rise above the other nameless fans like myself, and thus my fan art is created.

Now, the purpose of fanart and why cartoonists seem to enjoy it so much is, (I think), the combined happy reminder that they're appreciated enough to have their creations drawn, and the interesting look at their chars through another artist's interpretation. Here's where the problem is: I can't do fanart.

I sit at my computer, squinting carefully at a reference image of the character I'm drawing, erasing and redrawing over and over until I've managed to get the look of the character. These drawings I make aren't my own interpretation of the characters, they're only poorly made copies of them.

I want to apologize, then, for all this, and to say that if I make anymore fan art, that it won't just be another bad scan of FMU avatars.

Well, I'm glad you can tell us this, And really, whatever your approach to the craft, I appreciate anything immensely. Personally, I view fanart as a sort of red badge of courage, and as a complex thank you from the fans (Or, in my case, Fan) of a work. And whatever the motivation or method I applaud anything that comes my way (And to tell you the truth, it was one of the reasons of my starting a comic, Y'know, other than the "artistic drive" and "Expressionistic freedom" things.) But thank you for spilling your guts Valk, and I'll appreciate anything that comes my way.

Thanks. Now that my guts are all of over the floor, it's back to the drawing board. (Quite literally in this case.)

Well i don't know you if you know this, but i kinda admire you're fanart. I mean really, i can't draw worth crap. So when ever i meet talented artists such as yourself and cal, it makes me feel great that i know some many cool and talented people. I mean, even if you think you could do better, i really think it's awesome.

Plus man, it's awesome that we even get Fan-Art in the first place. I mean even though it's Cal's comic, i still treasure it as mine own. i little fan recognition is awesome, especailly pointing out that since we're sort of new at this. So valk, i'm very grateful of your contributions and im sure it's not all in vain.

Thank you, and I must say the feeling of 'enlightenment-via-association' is mutal. I'm currently struggling with a new form of fan-contribution, but I keep encountering roadblocks; like my Wacom tablet breaking, switching to Flash MX, and iTunes's annoying anti-piracy measures.
